Humana and Wal-Mart Forming Co-Branded Low-Cost Prescription Drug Plan

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, and health insurer Humana Inc. build an alliance to offer a low-cost Medicare Part D prescription drug plan that they say will be the cheapest on the market in 2011.
The companies said in statement that premiums for the Humana Wal-Mart-Preferred Rx Plan will be $14.80 per month, less than half the average premium for Medicare prescription drug plans that is available this year.
“One of the primary goals of health care reform is to make health coverage more affordable “ and that’s what we’re doing with the introduction of this low-cost Medicare Part D plan,” said William Fleming, PharmD, vice president of Humana Pharmacy Solutions. “People are more likely to take the medications prescribed for them when they can afford those medications. And adhering to prescription-drug regimens can enable people to be healthier and prevent future illness. At Humana, we believe that this prevention helps people live healthier lives and achieve lifelong well-being.”
The Humana Wal-Mart-Preferred Rx Plan will be available in 2011 in all 50 states plus Washington, DC.
The companies also said members who fill their prescriptions at pharmacies in Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Market and Sam’s Club locations can have co-payments of as little as $2.
Wal-Mart shares rose a slightly to $53.53. Humana stock gained 16 cents to $50.40.

Severe mental illness is more common among college students than it used to be a decade ago, with more young people arriving on campus with pre-existing conditions and a willingness to seek help for emotional distress, revealed a new study.
Currently there are more cases of severe mental illness are being reported among college students than it used to be a decade ago, a new U.S. study shows.
The study was spearheaded by John C. Guthman, Hofstra University Director of Student Counseling. Guthman and his research team conducted an in-depth analysis of approximately 3,300 college students diagnostic records who utilized the university counseling between 1997 and 2009. The students were diagnosed for mental disorders, suicidal tendencies and behavioral reports, the team determined that over the years most students had been diagnosed with behavioral and mood disorders.
“If we look at the average college student and their level of psychological and emotional functioning and distress, on the whole they are not necessarily worse off than they were 10 years ago,” Guthman said and added: “However, there are some students who are outliers and they have some difficulty in some areas. And these relatively few students that present in significan’t distress seem to have increased to a greater percentage than they were a decade ago.”
Additionally, the percentage of students who suffered from moderate to severe depression had risen over the years and jumped from 34% to 41%. The team also found that students who had suicide thoughts during the first two weeks of treatment had declined from 26% in 1998 to 11% in 2009.
Our findings may suggest that students with severe emotional stress are getting better education, outreach and support during childhood that makes them more likely to attend college than in the past,Guthman noted.

The study also found that older adults have to work out more often than younger people to maintain their muscle mass, but they also have to be consistent in their lifting.
There were 70 participants in the 48-week study.Of those participants, 39 were aged 60 to 75, while the rest were aged 20 to 35. In the first four months of the study, the participants did the same amounts of the same exercises “ leg presses, squats and knee extensions “ three sets, three days a week. They all increased the level of resistance during that time and all participants gained muscle during that four months.
For the rest of the study, the participants were divided randomly into three groups. One group did the same exercises, but only one set of them once a week. Another group did the same number of sets three as before, but only one day a week rather than three. Another group did no exercise.
At the end of the study, the researchers found that the young adults who had continued to exercise showed very little to no difference in the muscle gains they had made in the previous four months. The older adults lost muscle mass, but their strength remained the same.

California is all set to be one of the first states to comply with this federal reform law.
As per the new policy, people who were earlier refused medical insurance on account of their chronic illness can now take advantage of the new high risk insurance pool by paying much lower premiums. As stated by President Obama in an address to the American Nurses Association on Wednesday, high risk health insurance pools would offer affordable insurance to sick people who were previously unable to obtain health insurance. The pool will run in tandem with the states own existing pool and the state government will run and look after the programs.
The California government is expecting to receive $761 million for operating the high risk federal health insurance program alongside the states present high risk pool. However, adequacy of the money is being questioned by many health care experts, citing the fact that the money is nowhere enough or sufficient to deal with the huge number of uninsured people. Number of uninsured people in the U.S. is currently more than 50 million. About half of them suffer from some chronic health problems.

Abbott Announces Recalls Of Similac Powdered Infant Formula Due To Beetle Contamination

Abbott initiated an immediate and voluntary recall of certain Similac powder infant formulas in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.
US Food and Drug Administration has made an announcement about the Similac brand baby formula recall due to possible contamination of beetles or their larvae. However, the company believes that there is a very slim chance of contamination.
According to the FDA, the beetles and its larvae are not a threat to human life, but they might pose some danger to the infants and could cause stomach discomfort and the infant may refuse to eat.
œWhile the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted, the company said in a statement.
FDA officials also advised parents that in case the infants have any of the symptoms, then they ought to take their children to the pediatrician.

Abbott Voluntarily Recalls Wight-Loss Drug Meridia In US Canada Due To Heart Risk

Abbott Laboratories, on of the largest drug and medical-device maker, said Friday it will voluntarily withdraw its diet pill Meridia market at the request of the Food and Drug Administration. The company will pull the drug from US, Canada, and Australia markets. Earlier this year, the drug was removed from European markets.
Previously, a study showed that the controversial obesity drug Meridia (sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate) increases the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with a history of heart disease.
Meridia (sibutramine) is aiming to aid overweight or obese people lose weight.
FDAs scientist said they requested the withdrawal because the drug’s risks were not justified compared with “the very modest weight loss that people achieve while taking the prescribed drug.
“Physicians are advised to stop prescribing Meridia to their patients and patients should stop taking this medication,” Dr. John Jenkins, the FDA’s director for new drugs, said in a statement.
Abbott agreed to recall Meridia, albeit the company says the drug is safe. The company also said that theyre discussing the fate of Meridia in other countries.
Last year, Abbott had sales of $30.8 billion, but according to Reuters, expected just $30 million in U.S. sales of Meridia in 2010. The company has not advertised the drug in the US in the past several years. According to FDA, the usage of Meridias diet pill has fallen from 1.3 million prescriptions in 1998 to about 250,000 in 2009.

Aetna Rolls Back Insurance Rate Hike

A review of the paperwork justifying the increase by Aetnas own staff as well as a California regulator brought out the miscalculation, forcing the insurer to withdraw the hike even ahead of the completion of the review. New study showed that animal based proteins and fats increased mortality rates in both men and women. The study also suggested that low-carbohydrates Atkins diet increased cardiovascular mortality and cancer mortality. This means that a low-carbohydrate diet derives fats and proteins from vegetable sources rather than meats are probably healthier.
Researchers analyzed the data from Nurses’ Health study. Researches studied 85,168 women aged between 34 and 59 years of age and 44,548 men aged between 40 and 75 years of age for at least 20 years.
Comparing the two kinds of diets over two decades, the group of researchers found that the low-carb, vegetable-based plan resulted in reduced rates of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer, and a lower rate of all-cause death overall. And animal-based diet was also associated with increased risk of death from cancer. In contrast, a vegetable-based diet exhibited a 20% lower death rate and a 23% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.
“You can have the initial Atkins-type of low-carb diet, which is loaded with sausages, bacon, steaks, and you can have healthy versions of the low-carb diet with more vegetable- or plant-based protein and fat,” said Dr. Frank B. Hu, senior author of a study.
The study also discovered that men and women who ate diets high in animal-based proteins had higher averages body mass index (BMI)s and were more likely to smoke. Interestingly, men and women who ate more plant or vegetable-based proteins and fats ate more whole grains and tended to drink more alcohol.
The study was published in the Sept. 7 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine from Harvard.

Antidepressants May Not Benefit Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

A group of medical professionals and researchers initiated a news study, coordinated by Dr. Katrina Williams of the University of New South Wales in Australia, regarding the effects of antidepressant against autism patients.
The group suggests discontinuing the use of antidepressants because they found that these unapproved treatment methods for autism may be doing more harm than good. There has never been a large scale study completed to test and support the affectivity of thee drugs in autistic children.
Dr. Williams and her team based their analysis on the collected medical data from seven clinical trials. 271 people were used in the trials that compared the use of antidepressants and placebo drugs in people diagnosed with autism. The evaluated antidepressants drugs are; Prozac, Luvox, Pondimin, and Celexa. These drugs are most prescribed medicines by physicians to treat certain aspects of autism, which includes obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, and even depression.
The results of this extensive medical analysis indicate the children prescribed these various drugs fared no better than those given a placebo. There is also an incident that a child experienced a prolonged seizure after ingesting Celexa. The group concluded that there is no evidence that antidepressants help children or adults with autism and some signs that they could harm children.

A new study shows that the fillings and sealants that many dentists use and brushed onto teeth to prevent decay can expose children to the controversial chemical bisphenol A (BPA).
Writing in the journal Pediatrics, doctors warn that BPA-related compounds are common ingredients in plastic-based dental filling materials and sealants.
Dr. Abby Fleisch at Children’s Hospital Boston, who spearheaded the research, said: “We would recommend avoiding sealants during pregnancy.”
Although dental sealants and fillings don’t contain pure BPA, saliva can cause the fillings and sealants to leach and BPA levels in saliva can jump to 88 times higher than normal directly after a sealant is used.
In response to this issue, the North American dental community stated that wiping off the excess sealant or resin will minimize the risk of BPA exposure.
The researchers also cited that the benefits of sealants in cavities protection fro kids outweighed risks linked to the BPA exposure.
BPA, a man-made chemical, is found in a various products including plastic bottles, cans, and even in paper receipts, according to a new Canadian study.
Meanwhile, the author of the study said consumers should limit their exposure to the chemical and manufacturers should start looking for BPA-free materials.

A series of three studies conducted by researchers at Saint Louis University and Miami University in Ohio showed that pet owners are more physically fit, are less lonely and have a greater self-esteem, are less fearful of ordinary life obstacles and are more outgoing and conscientious.
The study, published online in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, showed the benefits of pet ownership in the everyday lives of people. While previous studies have shown the benefits of pet ownership for people who have health issues like depression, this is first study to link the benefits to everyday life.
There were a total of 370 participants in the three studies. One of the studies had 217 people answering surveys to determine whether the pet owners in the group differed in such areas as well-being, attachment styles, and personality type from the non-pet owners.
In the second study, 56 dog owners participated. This study looked at whether the pet owners benefited more when the pets they owned were seen as the pets who would meet their social needs.
The third study involved 96 pet-owning undergraduate students. They were to write about a time when they felt rejected socially. The study found that in dealing with feelings of rejection, writing about their pets was just as effective as writing about people.

CDC Report Says Nearly Half Of Americans Use Prescription Drugs

Earlier this week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced data about the prescription-drug used in 2008. The new study shows that almost half of Americans, 48.3% in the 2007-2008 period, took at least one prescription drug per month in 2008, up from 43.5% over the past year.
“As new drugs are introduced and new uses for old drugs are found, more patients can have improved health and quality of life with the appropriate use of prescription drugs,” the CDC said in its report. But the agency said there are some concerns, noting “current prescription drug use patterns need to be better understood.”
The prescription drug usage surged also applied to youths whose usage rose to 20%. The rest also shoed that 40% of older Americans (at least 60-years old and above) take at least five or more prescription drugs in the past month. It also indicates that women have 10% more prescriptions than men. The study also stated that Caucasian Americans take 10% more prescribed drugs than African American with 42%, as well as Mexican Americans with 33.9%.
Additionally, CDC report also showed that people with a regular place for health care were 2.7 times as likely to have used prescription drugs in the past month compared to those without the benefit. A new study revealed that childhood obesity is the biggest health problem for kids by adults in the United States.
Researchers and medical experts of University of Michigan C.S. Mott Childrens Hospital facilitated a poll service, National Poll on Childrens Health, and they found that adults in the United States rate childhood obesity as the biggest health problem for kids.
Approximately 2,064 adults were participated in the poll, they were asked to rate 20 different major and minor health concerns for children.
The 2010 National Poll on Childrens Health top 10 health concerns for U.S. children are the following:
1. Childhood obesity “ 38%
2. Drug addiction “ 30%
3. Nicotine addiction “ 29%
4. Internet safety “ 25%
5. Stress or depression “ 24%
6. Bullying or harassment “ 23%
7. Early pregnancy “ 23%

9. Alcohol addiction “ 20%
10. Lack of physical activity “ 20%
Additionally, people were participated in the poll were also asked to rate whether these health problems are getting better, staying the same, or getting worse.

Chinese Health Ministry Clears Baby Milk Formula of Causing Premature Breast Development in Babies

Late Sunday the Chinese government health department publicized that it discovered no clinical evidence that the powdered milk, alleged for causing apparent breast enlargement in three infant girls in south-central China, has any link with it.
A leading Chinese milk powder company, Synutra, was at the center of the whole suspicion regarding the three infant girls’ case, which were fed milk prepared from its powder.
Of course, the milk manufacturer defend itself and strongly denied the allegations and throughout this whole ordeal it has defended the integrity of their products, the company will conduct will file a lawsuit against the media for false reporting.
The Chinese health ministry tested the powdered milk and they found no traces of inappropriate hormones out of 73 samples of infant formula, 42 were from Synutra. One sample of a milk powder residue was from one of the infant girls’ homes.
The ministry initiated the test on questioned powdered milk after the Chinese local media had speculated that such hormones might be responsible for the infants’ breast enlargement.
A group of Chinese medical experts said that the infants’ physiological development was not unheard of, quoted the official Xinhua news agency.
In 2008, Chinese milk powder were recalled and questioned due to melamine contamination, an industrial chemical used in hiding the impact of diluting raw milk with water, that resulted in the death of six babies and sickened 300,000.

Concurring with the views, Dr. Steven Nissen, cardiologist, Cleveland Clinic termed the findings œdisturbing and provocative. Regulators need to take notice to this and doctors need to be more conservative while prescribing Micardis, he opined.
However, defending the drug, Boehringer Ingelheim said in a statement that “internal safety data analysis of primary data contradicts the conclusions.” Its own findings in three large trials didnt bring out any significan’t cancer risk associated with the use of this drug, it stressed.

The research team discovered that by adding tiotropium to low doses of inhaled corticosteroids is more effective at controlling asthma than doubling the dosage of inhaled corticosteroids alone, and as effective as adding the long-acting beta agonist salmeterol.
œTiotropium relaxes smooth muscle in the airways through a different mechanism than beta agonists, and thus may help people who do not respond well to currently recommended treatments, said study lead Stephen Peters, M.D., Ph.D., of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.
“We also found that patients really did not have any adverse effects or side effects from the medication, and therefore this represents a nice option for patients that are not achieving control on their current therapy,” said Mario Castro M.D. of Washington University.
However, Dr. Peters and his team noted that the findings are still in early stage and numerous clinical trials are needed.
