Vitamin B12 helps with the formation of red blood cells. The hemoglobin in the red blood cells helps transport oxygen through the bloodstream to all the different parts of the body. Without the oxygen carried by the red bloods cells our cells would cease to function and we would die rather quickly.

The best way to maintain high enough levels of vitamin B12 is through a well balanced diet. Enough foods contain the vitamin that as long as you are eating a healthy balanced diet you should be able to receive and store enough vitamin B12 to function properly. If you are on a restricted diet due to health issues than there are certain foods that contain a higher amount of vitamin B12. Shellfish, dairy products, poultry, pork, beef and eggs are just a few of the food items that have high levels of vitamin B12.
