Vitamin D

The Vitamin from the Sun

Overall 60% of all Americans are Vitamin D deficient! That is a staggering statistic that should be alarming to a lot of people. Vitamin D is an important vitamin in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. And believe it or not it is quite easy to obtain the recommended 400-600 IU of Vitamin D on a daily basis.

Most Vitamin D cannot be obtained through your diet. Fruits and vegetables don’t contain any vitamin D and may be high in other vitamins it will not help in your vitamin D consumption. Some fish and milk contain Vitamin D but you would have to eat them in excessive amounts in order to get the allotted amount of the vitamin.

The best way to obtain Vitamin D is through sun exposure. Most people do not get enough sun light everyday to get their 400-800 IU of Vitamin D, especially during the winter months. All it takes is 15-20 of sunlight every day to get enough of the needed vitamin. If you are concerned about skin cancer than you can wear some protective lotion or a hate but the sunlight does need to hit your skin in order for it to gain the Vitamin D so you may need to be out longer than 15 minutes if you wear sun tan lotion. If you are too worried about the possibility of getting skin cancer than taking a vitamin supplement which contains vitamin D is an option as well. During the winter months you might consider taking the supplement rather than being outside in the cold.

Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps build the immune system to better fight diseases.  Most people think that it’s only used to promote healthy bones but it also helps decrease the risk of some cancers, high blood pressure and heart disease. It has also been shown that low levels of Vitamin D are linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia (muscle and connective tissue pain).

So if you’re stuck inside your office or classroom all day, take a lunch break and take a walk. Get out into the sun so you can reach your daily Vitamin D consumption easily. And let’s face it, no one wants to be stuck inside all day anywhere, take your fifteen minute break and go walk through a beautiful park and enjoy the outdoors. If you can’t do that than make sure that you’re taking a vitamin supplement to make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D.
